India and ASEAN: Non-Traditional Security Threats
Historically there have been close cultural and economic linkages between Peninsular India and Southeast Asia. Both regions face common security challenges of a wide-ranging nature not limited to traditional security. Non-traditional components of security, especially those relating to the economy, environment and ethnicity, have acquired greater significance in the security discourse of both India and Southeast Asia. The importance of economic security has acquired wider recognition especially in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis. Environmental threats have the potential of spilling over from one region into another. The haze in Indonesia and the Indian Ocean tsunami are notable examples. The potential for ethnic conflict exists in Peninsular India and Southeast Asia since both these regions are populated by a multiplicity of ethnic groups living in close proximity to each other. Hence there is a need for closer association, greater interaction, better understanding and mutual cooperation to ensure peace and development.
