Civil Society and Human Security: South and Southeast Asian Experiences

While human Security is best understood as the well being of citizens, civil society represents the space between the government and the government and the people. Civil society organizations and the state are both working for providing human security at different levels. But how has the relationship between the State and the civil society improved human security? How has it influenced the state, civil society, and human security? How has this relationship coped with regional organisations such as ASEAN and SAARC and how is this likely to evolve in the age of information technology and the Right to Information where the citizen is much more informed? How is the civil society itself changing and has it coped with the reality of ethnic, religious and other conflicts in the region?

In attempting to answer these questions, the Centre for Security Analysis organised an International Seminar on the theme Civil Society and Human Security: South and Southeast Asian Experiences in August 2007. This book which brings together papers presented and the discussions held t the seminar, is a definitive contribution to a broader understanding of the issues involved.
