Economic Growth and National Security

Editor V.R. Raghavan
Published by Centre for Security Analysis

Several forecasts suggest that the Indian economy could grow at the rate of 8% until 2020 and that it could become the third largest economy in the world by 2035. Amidst these remarkable projections, a growing concern has been the consequences of unequal distribution of the fruits of economic growth on internal security. India's rising economic power has also accorded it with a larger international strategic profile. India is being seen as a stabilizing force within the region and beyond especially in the maritime domain of the Indian Ocean. India's dependence on imported energy gives it a vital stake in contributing to the peace and stability of energy exporting regions as well as safeguarding sea lines of communication. In this context, the role of the armed forces acquires added significance.

Sustained economic growth is a pre-requisite for India's military modernization. India will have to make choices on the kind of military modernization it wants to pursue. Moreover, the capabilities that are required for the Indian armed forces to meet the emerging internal and external security challenges have to be identified. India's strategic alignments and partnerships, which will serve to enhance these capabilities, also have to be defined. In order to analyse these aspects, the Centre for Security Analysis, Chennai along with the United Service Institution of India, New Delhi organised a Seminar "Economic Growth and National Security" in October 2007. This book is a compilation of the papers presented at the Seminar.
