India faces a number of internal security challenges ranging from the separatist movement in Kashmir to the various insurgencies and ethnic conflicts in the Northeast. The Indian state has used various instruments to address these conflicts including military force, political negotiations and economic packages but with only partial success. If these conflicts are to have a chance of being resolved, a bottom-up approach involving the participation of civil society is equally important. Civil society organizations can contribute in conflict management and resolution as well as in the economic and social reconstruction of conflict zones.
The Centre for Security Analysis organised a National Seminar on the theme of Civil Society in Conflict Situations in October 2007 focusing on the role of civil society in Kashmir, the Northeast and Nepal with a view to provide a platform for scholars, journalists and activists who have studied the varied experiences in different conflict zones to exchange views and ideas. This book, which brings together the papers presented and the discussions held at the seminar, is a definitive contribution to a broader understanding of the issues involved.
