Today as the world economies battle to come out of a financial crisis, the pace of economic growth and development in much of Asia has slowed down. However, this has not fundamentally altered projections for the region’s future energy needs. One of the key elements in the energy security strategy of countries in Asia is investing in overseas energy assets and studying how the search for energy abroad affects relations between India and China and between other countries in the region has become an apposite area of research. Along with economic diplomacy, tapping the potential of alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydroelectric energy along with nuclear energy has also become imperative. This acquires further importance in light of the link between fossil fuel consumption and global warming and the consequent need to maintain a balance between energy security and environmental security.
Given Asia’s prevailing energy consumption patterns, understanding the structure of its energy mix today and for the future is a useful basis from which to assess strategic considerations regarding energy security. This book, which is a result of a seminar organized by the Centre for Security Analysis, Chennai and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore, in March 2009, is a compendium of chapters addressing issues such as the global trends of energy consumption, geopolitics of energy security, supply chain security, and alternative sources of energy in the Asia Pacific. In light of the national and international interest in the issue of energy security and the possibility that energy concerns have the potential of becoming the cause of serious international conflicts, this book will be of interest to academics, policy makers and students of international relations and security studies.
