Peace and Conflict Resolution: Emerging Ideas

The field of conflict resolution and peace building has increasingly come to recognize the role of new actors and catalysts in preventing violence and building peace. At the heart of the notion of peace building is the idea of meeting needs: for security and order, for a reasonable standard of living, and for recognition of identity and worth of the human being. Recognition of these basic needs has opened avenues for actors other than the state to build bridges and bring conflicting people together.

With an aim to discuss and emphasize some of the emerging ideas in conflict resolution and peace building the Rotary International District 3230 and the Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) organized a conference in August 2009 at Chennai supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF). The Rotary International has been the foremost non-state actor working tirelessly towards building peace. CSA is another such organization seeking practical solutions to conflicts in the region and working on several aspects of human security. HSF with its mission to provide for peace and development seized the opportunity to collaborate with RI District 3230 and CSA in promoting the cause for peace and conflict resolution. This book encapsulates the proceedings of the conference and will interest everyone involved in furthering the cause of peace and conflict resolution. The book will be of special interest to all Rotarians who have been involved in improving global human security.
